Obit: Vevay Reveille Thurs. April 27, 1897

Died-- Smith- In Allensville, Ind. Saturday, April 24, 1897
Samuel E. Smith, aged 37 years 3 months and 17 days. Mr. Smith married Miss Eliza Jakaway in 1878. His wife and eight children survive him. He united with the M. E. Church at Allensville in 1875, and since then has lived a devoted Christian. He was a good citizen and a useful man. Mrs. Smith was a carpenter by trade, and has been in the employ of A. Johnson & Son, at Aaron, for several years. The funeral was held at Allensville Monday, conducted by Rev. Campbell, and the remains interred in the Allensville Cemetery. As showing the high esteem in which he was held, and charity and generosity of the people of the neighborhood- a mortgage of $35 on his house and lot was paid and cost of burial. It was timely and worthily bestowed on the widow and her eight children.

Passed away at 10:00 p.m. Saturday Evening April 24, 1897. Was born July 9, 1849, his age being 47 yrs. 9 mo. 15 days. He united with M. E. Church at Allensville about 1875. Was married to Miss Louisa Jakway on April 1, 1878. to them born eight children, all are living the youngest being 18 months. Mr. Smith was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Levi Smith of near E. Enterprise. He was raised in this vicinity and was a very industrious and highly respected citizen. While not rich in this worlds goods, he was wealthy in love and affection for his family, more cheerful and happy home is not found.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. S. Campbell. Beautiful songs, prayer, and scripture services were held at the home, after which the remains were taken to Allenville for internment. Followed by a large company of sympathizing friends.
A solemn and impressive service was held at the cemetery. One feature of which was the songs full of comfort and assurance.

FINAL RITES HELD WEDNESDAY FOR GEORGE H. SMITH

Final rites were held Wednesday, Sept 27, 2:00 P.M. at the Edon Church of Christ for George H. Smith, 93, Edon. Mr. Smith died Sunday at Hillside Nursing Home.
He was a retired carpenter and a member of the Edon Church of Christ. He moved to this area in 1940 from Milford, Illinois.
Surviving are two sons, Dwight of Wauseon, and Gerald of Bryan, one daughter, Mrs. Harold ( Marjorie) Miller, Route 2, Edon; one brother, William Smith, Charleston, Ind; three sisters , Mrs. Emma McDonald, Alvin Illinois, Mrs. Bessie Shatell, West Lebanon, Ind. , Mrs. Lucy McLaughlin, Hoopeston, Illinois, six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Davi stokes, minister of the church of Christ officiated. Burial was in the Edon Cemetery.

WILLIAM SMITH PASSES AWAY

William R. Smith, 90, of route 1, Bennington,Ind., near Fairview, passed away Monday at Clark County Memorial Hospital in Jeffersonville.
He was born Sept. 25, 1882, in Danville , Illinois, the son of Samuel and Louisa Jakaway Smith. He was a retired farmer and minister and was a member of Vevay Nazarene Church. He spent his early life in Switzerland County, lived in Lawrence County for 27 years, and had spent the past 30 years in Switzerland County Ind.
On May 29, 1901, he married Lula B. Morrison, who died Nov. 14, 1968.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Charlotte Waits of Jeffersonville; two sons, Russell of near Fairview and Florin of Medora; three sister, Mrs. Emma McDonald of Alvin, Ill., Mrs. Luch McLaughlin of Hoopeston, Ill. and Mrs. Bessie Shattel of West Lebanon; 12 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren; and several great great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were conducted Wednesday by the Rev. Velma H. Manuel from Haskell and Morrison Funeral Home. Burial was in the Vevay Cemetery.




ANNA A. MATHIS

Anna Amanda Mathis, 84, of Rt. 1, Collison IL. died Wednesday, July 31, 1968 at Nance Nursing Home in Danville, Ill., after an illness of one year. She was born Oct. 28, 1883 in Switzerland County, the daughter of Samuel and Louisa Jakaway Smith. She was married in Williamsport in 1906, to Charles A. Mathis, who died in 58. She lived in Pence most of her life, moving four years ago to Collison to make her home with a daughter.
The deceased was a member of the West Lebanon Christian Church.
She is survived by two sons, Samuel Mathis, Galveston, Ind.; Winfield Mathis, Bicknell; three daughters, Mrs. henry (Eva) Kaniewski, Boswell; Mrs. Charles (Rena) Lester, Mishawaka; Mrs. Thelma Bussard, Collison, Ill.; 12 Grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two Brothers, George Smith, Edon, O.; William smith, Bennington; Three Sisters, Mrs. Bessie Shatell, West Lebanon, Mrs. Lucy McLaughlin, Hoopeston ; and Mrs. Emma McDonald, Alvin , IL.
Services were conducted at the Crowner-Siddens Mortuary, West Lebanon, Saturday with burial in West Lebanon Cemetery.

MRS. ALICE LAIRD

Hoopeston (cns)--Mrs. Alice Mae Laird, 75, died unexpectedly at her home at 806 E. main St. at 2:10 p.m. Sunday,June 24, 1962. She had been in ill health two months. She had resided at the Main St. address since 1940.
Born July 2, 1886, in Fairview, Ind., she was a daughter of Samuel E. and Louisa Jackway Smith. She was married July 4, 1902, in State Line Ind., to James W. Laird who preceded her in death April 16, 1940.
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Ora McCray of Watseka, Two sons, Lonnie of Hoopeston and Donald of Wonder Lake, Ill., and three brothers , George Smith of Edon, Ohio, William R. Smith of Fair view, and Charles H. of Milford.
Also Four sisters, Mrs. Anna Mathis of pence, Ind., Mrs. Harry McDonald of Alvin, Mrs. Bessie Shatell of West Lebanon, Ind. and Mrs. Lucy McLaughlin of Hoopeston, 10 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a daughter.
The body is at the Hamilton funeral Home where friends will be received 709 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Richard Wilson officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery near Milford.




LUCY WILLIAMS McLAUGHLIN

Lucy Williams McLaughlin 89, of Centennial Manor, Hoopeston, died at 11:40 AM, Sunday April 18th at the Hoopeston Community Memorial Nursing Home.
She was born April 2, 1893 in Switzerland County, Ind. The daughter of Samuel and Lousia Jakeway smith. she married Eddie E. William on December 31, 1912 at Watseka, Il and he preceded her in death on March 10, 1935. Later she married Edward Mitchell McLaughlin on July 1, 1943 and he proceded her in death in November 1953. Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Floyd (Lenora) Sheffield of Hoopeston, Il. Mrs. William (Helen) Briscoe of Milford, Il. Mrs. John (Elizabeth) Marcinko of Cayuga, In.; and 3 sons, Lee Williams of Leroy, Il.; Robert E. Williams of Northridge Ca. and Eddie Williams of Cypress, Ca.; 24 Granchildren and 23 Great Grandchildren. she was proceeded in death by two children, Lucille Oleen and Billy S. Williams. Also her parents, three brothers, four sisters, one grandchild and 3 great grandchildren. Funeral Services were conducted at 1:30 wednesdayafternoon (April 21st at the Hamilton-Orr Funeral Home with the Rev. Wheeler T. Harden officiating. Rev. Harden is the minister of the First Christian Church of Hoopeston of which she was a member.




CHARLIE H. SMITH

Charles Harvey Smith, 70, 203 W. Frederick, died at 6:10 p.m. yesterday (June 7, 1966) at Carle memorial Hospital, Urbana. He had been ill the past two years.
He was born Sept. 8, 1895 in Switzerland County In. The son of Samuel and Louisa Jakaway Smith. He was employed in Chicago for several years and later self employed as a carpenter and electrician . He had resided in Milford since 1960.
He was married to Eva Packard on July 15, 1915, who preceded him on Aug. 14, 1965.
Surviving are two sons, Morris of East Chicago, Ind. and Marvin , Glenwood; two brothers, George of Edon, Ohio and William of Bennington, Ind.; four sisters, Mrs. Emma McDonald, Alvin, Mrs. Bessie Shattel, West Lebanon, Ind.; Mrs. Anna Mathis, Collison and Mrs. Lucy McLaughlin, Hoopeston. He was preceded by his parents and one sister.
Mr. Smith was a member of the Milford Christian Church. Service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Jameson Funeral Home with the Rev. Roy William officiating. Burial in the Maple Grove Cemetery.
