	BUCKNER, HARRISON BENJAMIN, Private. Son of William and Winifred Buckner (Cosby); born October 24, 1893, Cincinnati, Ohio. Employed as laborer, Madison, Ind., when he entered service August 3, 1918. Sent to Camp Dodge, Ia.; assigned to 75th Company, 163rd Depot Brigade. Transferred to Company F, 804th Pioneer Infantry. Overseas in September, 1918, and died of pneumonia October 3, 1918. (Hospital unknown.) Body returned to U.S., and buried in Springdale Cemetery, Madison, Ind.
	BUCKNER, WILLIAM, Private. Son of William and Winifred Buckner (Cosby); born February 28, 1896, Madison, Ind. Laborer. Entered service August 22, 1918, Madison, Ind. Sent to Camp Dodge, Ia.; assigned to 69th Company, 18th Training Battalion, 163rd Depot Brigade. Transferred to Company E, 809th Pioneer Infantry. Died of pneumonia October 6, 1918, on transport going to France. Body returned to U.S., and buried in Springdale Cemetery, Madison, Ind.
	COOTS, CARL JOSEPH, Private. Son of Robert and Mamie Quinn Coots; born January 8, 1901, Carroll County, Ky. Moved to Jefferson County, Ind. in 1914. Drug clerk. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army February 18, 1918, Madison, Ind. Sent to Columbus Barracks, Ohio. Transferred to Douglas, Ariz.; assigned to Troop I, 7th Cavalry. Died of pneumonia April 15, 1918, Douglas, Ariz. Buried in Springdale Cemetery, Madison, Ind.
	GLOVER, EARL, Private. Son of David and Belle Davis Glover; born August 27, 1892, Madison, Ind. Laborer. Entered service June 26, 1918, Madison, Ind. Sent to Camp Sherman, Ohio; assigned to 19th Company, 5th Training Battalion, 158th Depot Brigade. Transferred to Company M, 334th Infantry, 84th Division. Went overseas in September 1918. Died of pneumonia shortly after landing in France October 5, 1918. (Burial place unknown.) 	HALL, FREDERICK JOSEPH, Wagoner. Son of James Douglas and Anne Bowman Hall; born December 15, 1881, Madison, Ind. Student in Taylor University, Upland, Ind., when he enlisted in Indiana National Guard, 152nd Ambulance Company, 113th Sanitary Troop, April 2, 1917. Sent to Camp Shelby, Miss., where he died July 17, 1918, as the result of an accident, when thrown from ambulance. Buried in Kent Cemetery, Jefferson County, Ind.
	HERNER, RAYMOND D., Private. Son of Frank and Emma Herner; born January 26, 1899, Madison, Ind. Laborer. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army October 28, 1917, Madison, Ind. Sent to Ft. Thomas, Ky.; assigned to Battery C, 17th Field Artillery. Overseas in December 1917. Took part in battles of Verdun Sector, Chateau Thierry, Soissons, and Meuse Argonne. Died of pneumonia February 13, 1919, Coblenz, Germany. Body returned to U.S., and buried in Springdale Cemetery, Madison, Ind.
	HOUSEFIELD, ALFRED, Private. Son of John B. and Sophia Snarrenberg Housefield; born December 10, 1895, Belleview, Jefferson County, Ind. Farmer. Entered service in March, 1918, Madison, Ind. Sent to Camp Greene, N.C.; assigned to Company L, 59th Infantry, 4th Division. Went overseas in May 1918. Killed in action August 9, 1918, in the Chateau Thierry Sector. (Burial place unknown.) 	JACKSON, PAUL STANLEY, Private. Son of Edward and Nancy Jackson; born May 3, 1898, Versailles, Ind. Family moved to Madison, Ind. in 1911. Clerk. Enlisted in Company I, 4th Regiment, Indiana National Guard, July 28, 1917, Madison, Ind. Sent to Camp Shelby, Miss.; assigned to Battery E, 139th Field Artillery. Died of pneumonia February 14, 1918, Camp Shelby, Miss. Buried at Fairmount, near Madison, Ind.
	LAND, CHAUNCEY, Private. Son of W.H. and Edna F. Land; born September 2, 1886, Bryantsburg, Ind., near the Ripley-Jefferson County Line. Laborer. Entered service September 2, 1918, Madison, Ind. Sent to Camp Grant, Ill.; assigned to Company C, 1st Training Battalion, 5th Limited Service Regiment, 161st Depot Brigade. Died of pneumonia October 9, 1918, Camp Grant, Ill. Buried in West Fork Cemetery, near Bryantsburg, Jefferson County, Ind.
	LAND, WALTER H., Private. Son of W. H. and Edna F. Land; born April 10, 1894, Bryantsburg, Ind., near the Ripley-Jefferson County line. Farmer. Entered service May 1, 1918, Madison, Ind. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky.; assigned to 35th Ambulance Company. Went overseas in August, 1918. Died November 15, 1918, (place not known), from wounds received in an accident. (Burial place unknown.)
	LEWIS, ELZIE, Private. Son of Michael and Nora McVey Lewis; born December 10, 1888, Madison, Ind. Tinner. Entered service December 19, 1917, Elk City, Okla. Sent to Camp Travis, Tex. Went overseas in February 1918; assigned to Company I., 9th Infantry, 2nd Division. Killed in action May 23, 1918. (Place not known.) Buried in American Cemetery No. 636, Row 7, Plot 4, Grave 179, Bony, Aisne, France.
	LITTRELL, CLARENCE, Fireman, 1st Class. Son of James David (deceased) and Hannah Littrell; born August 29, 1896, Lancaster, Jefferson County, Ind. Laborer. Enlisted in U.S. Navy December 1, 1917. Sent to Great Lakes Naval Training Station, Chicago, Ill.; assigned to duty as First Class Fireman. Died of pneumonia January 31, 1918, Base Hospital, Great Lakes Naval Training Station, Ill. Buried in College Hill Cemetery, Lancaster, Jefferson County, Ind.
	LITTRELL, LOUIS, Private. Son of James David (deceased) an Jemima Arnold Littrell; born (date not given) near Brooksburg, Jefferson County, Ind. Laborer. Entered the Canadian Army (date and place not given). Sent to London, Ontario, for training. Went overseas (date not known), and was killed in action June 13, 1916, near Mont Sorell. Survived by widow, Alice Littrell, and one child, Marion Littrell.
	MORGAN, FRANK, Private. Son of William H. and Charity Gibbons Morgan; born January 18, 1891, Milton, Adair County, Ky. Moved to Jefferson County, Ind. in 1901. Laborer. Volunteered for service after the outbreak of the war, but was rejected. Entered service March 6, 1918, Madison, Ind. Sent to Columbus Barracks, Ohio; assigned to Coast Artillery Corps. Died of pneumonia March 26, 1918, Columbus Barracks, Ohio. Buried in Olive Branch Cemetery, Jefferson County, Ind.
	NICHOLS, WM. SCHMIDLAPP, 1st Lieutenant. Son of Rev. and Mrs. George D. Nichols; born June 29, 1890, New Paris, Ohio. Moved to Jefferson County, Ind., when a mere child. Attended Hanover College, Madison, Ind., and graduated from Western Reserve Medical College in 1915. Practicing medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, at time of enlistment, August 15, 1917. Sent to Fort Oglethorpe, Ga.; commissioned First Lieutenant in the Medical Corps. Died as a result of an accident June 21, 1918. Buried in Springdale Cemetery, Madison, Ind.
	RITCHEY, CHARLES HENRY, Private. Son of Charles F. and Hattie M. Ritchey; born February 22, 1895, Canaan, Jefferson County, Ind. Educated in Hanover College, Madison, Ind. Teacher. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army November 20, 1917. Sent to Fort Thomas, Ky. Transferred to Fort Oglethorpe, Ga.; assigned to 22nd Ambulance Company, Medical Detachment. Died of scarlet fever and pneumonia, January 24, 1918. Buried in Bayless Cemetery near Wirt, Ind. Reported as the first Jefferson County soldier to die in the World War. 	SAPPINGTON, MORRIS P., Private. Son of Charles S. and Julia Smith Sappington; born January 2, 1896, Madison, Ind. Hotel employe. Entered service May 6, 1918, Madison, Ind. Sent to Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind.; assigned to Company F, 22nd Engineers. Overseas in September 1918; assigned to Company D, 357th Infantry. Died from effects of blood poisoning following foot amputation, March 29, 1919, Hospital, Brest, France. Buried at Brest, France. Survived by widow, Gladys Sappington, and one son, Donald Allen Sappington, Madison, Ind.
	SELIG, MERRILL NORWOOD, Private. Son of George L. and Margaret Selig; born March 9, 1895, Madison, Ind. Employe of munition plant, Carnegie, Pa., where he was called into service in February 1918. Sent to Camp Lee, Va.; assigned to Company I, 145th Infantry. Went overseas (date not known). Died November 1, 1918, from wounds received in action. Buried, "Somewhere in Belgium." 	SHEPHERD, ROBERT, Private. Son of Henry (deceased) and Ollie Shepherd; born March 15, 1895, North Madison, Jefferson County, Ind. Farmer. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army June 22, 1916, Indianapolis, Ind. Sent to Columbus Barracks, Ohio; assigned to Troop B, 4th Cavalry. Transferred to Schofield Barracks, Honolulu; then back to Fort Clark, Tex. Served on the Mexican Border. Later transferred to Battery B, 50th Field Artillery, Camp Bowie, Tex., where he died of influenza November 1, 1918. Buried near West Fork, Bryantsburg, Jefferson County, Ind.
	SMITH, WILLIAM GEORGE, Private. Son of Matthew W. and Elizabeth Mack Smith; born January 14, 1894, Madison. Ind. Shipping clerk. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army in August 1917, Louisville, Ky. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky.; assigned to 336th Infantry. Stricken with pneumonia he was confined to the hospital the date his regiment left for overseas. Died of pneumonia March 29, 1918, Camp Taylor, Ky. Buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery, North Madison, Ind.
	STEPHENSON, EZRA GALE, Sergeant. Son of Mr. and Mrs. William H. Stephenson; born January 11, 1881, Patriot, Ind. Moved to Jefferson County in 1897. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army in 1907. Served two years in the Philippine Islands. Serving on Mexican Border, when ordered overseas in June, 1917, with the 102nd Motor Truck Company. In active service during campaign of 1918. Died of pneumonia February 12, 1919. (Place unknown). Survived by widow, Hattie Stephenson, Stockton, Cal.
	WARNER, WILLIAM CURTIS, Bugler. Son of A. L. and Belle Bare Warner; born April 6, 1892, Stark County, Ill. Family moved to Jefferson County in June, 1892. Farmer. Entered service July 21, 1918, Madison, Ind. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky. Transferred to Camp McClellan, Ala.; assigned to 12th Trench Mortar Battery as Bugler. Died of pneumonia January 22, 1919, Camp McClellan, Ala. Buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Saluda Township, Jefferson County, Ind.
	WARREN, JOHN, Private. Son of William and Amanda Jones Warren; born November 22, 1881, Jefferson County, Ind. Laborer. Entered service in February 1918. Sent to Fort Thomas, Ky. Transferred to Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind.; assigned to Company H, 28th Infantry. Went overseas, and was killed in action May 30, 1918. (Place unknown). Reported by the newspapers as the first man from Madison to fall in battle.
	WEBER, NICHOLAS JOHN, Private. Son of Frank and Annie Weber; born January 24, 1900, Madison, Ind. Spinner in cotton mill. Enlisted in U.S. Regular Army March 28, 1917, Madison, Ind. Sent to Fort Thomas, Ky.; assigned to 28th Infantry. Went overseas in June, 1917. Participated in battle of Cantigny, and was killed in action June 14, 1918. Body to be returned to U.S., for burial in Springdale Cemetery, Madison, Ind.
	WHITHAM, BENJAMIN DILLARD, Private. Son of Morgan F, and Emma L. Whitam; born May 11, 1899, near Hicks, Jefferson County, Ind. Farmer. Entered service June 24, 1918, Madison, Ind. Sent to Camp Sherman, Ohio; then to Camp Mills, N.Y.; assigned to Headquarters Company, 334th Infantry, 84th Division. Sent overseas in September, 1918. Died of pneumonia October 11, 1918, Base Hospital No. 10, France. Body to be returned to U.S., for burial in cemetery near his home in Jefferson County, Ind.
	WYNE, EVERETT CORBETT, Private. Son of James M. and Flora Wyne; born March 13, 1894, Deputy, Jefferson County, Ind. Farmer. Entered service June 29, 1918, Madison, Ind. Sent to Valparaiso University for special training. Transferred to Camp Colt, Pa.; assigned to Tank Corps. Died of pneumonia October 6, 1918, Camp Colt. Buried with military honors, at Deputy, Jefferson County, Ind.
	WYNE, JOHN W., Private. Son of Nicholas and Emma Wyne; born July 28, 1895, Wirt, Jefferson County, Ind. Saw-mill engineer. Entered service May 25, 1918. Sent to Camp Taylor, Ky.; assigned to 18th Company, 5th Battalion, 159th Depot Brigade. Transferred to Camp Greenleaf, Ga. Embarked for overseas November 10, 1918; assigned to Evacuation Hospital No. 33, and died February 10, 1819. Buried "Somewhere in France."
