Shelby Township, Jefferson County, Indiana
& Pleasant Township, Switzerland County, Indiana.

The modern church building is located on the Switzerland Co. side of the border and a majority of the cemetery is in Switzerland Co. However, the congregation formed in Jefferson Co. The first church building was on the south of modern Route 250 adjacent to the cemetery. The modern building is on the north side of the road, opposite the cemetery.

The church was founded in 1818. Stephen and Rebecca Ellis sold land on the Switzerland-Jefferson Co. border to trustees, Henry Banta, John Gillan (probably sic, Gilliland) and David Lentz for $1 on Aug. 10, 1825 (Jefferson Co. Deed Book D p. 251.) According to Charles Heberhart, who wrote a column for the Madison Courier, called, “They Say and Do in the Country,” (about 1940) the first church, completed in1825, was made from hewn logs measuring 24 by 30 feet. The next building was constructed in what is now the graveyard in 1845. This building was sold in 1865 to a businessman at Vevay who moved it. A brick building was built in 1866.

Most settlers probably originally attended Indian-Kentuck Baptist Church, which formed in 1814. Brushy Fork gave birth to the Cross Plains Baptist Church, Mt. Zion Baptist Church (in Bennington); and probably the Center Baptist Church in Jefferson Co. The congregation was unusually mixed for the area. Members included Scottish immigrants (Dalgleish, Cowan, McGregor, Harper); English (Firth, Owens); Low Dutch (Banta, Demaree, VanOsdol); Irish (Charlton, Henry) and many families whose origins stem from earlier than 1800 in America.

This cemetery is located in Shelby Township, Jefferson County, Indiana
(also partly in Switzerland County, Pleasant Township, Indiana).
It is on Hwy. 250 on the Switzerland/Jefferson County line,
about 1 mile west of Pleasant, Indiana.

I surveyed this cemetery in November 2000.

The info in my list here is how the name was spelled on the stone.

There were at least 18 stones that were not readable when I visited the cemetery in 2000. So there are about 11 stones that are no longer there or that I missed.
