Mt. Monroe Cemetery
Relocated: Section 26, T4 N, R10 E - Madison Township Jefferson County, Indiana
In early 1941, as the Holiness Church and cemetery was located on the west side of Jinestown Road, it survived the first acquisition made by the U.S. Government for the Jefferson Proving Ground. However, the following year the government extended the western boundary of the Proving Ground to the township line; thus, the church and cemetery was included. The cemetery is not mentioned in the warranty deed, which transferred the church to the government on Oct. 3, 1942. Silas D. Monroe, Area Montgomery and Hasque B. Carter, Trustees of the International Holiness Church, also known as the Dupont St. Zion Church, conveyed .75 acres to the United States of America. The property was located on the south half of the southwest quarter of section 18; more specifically, on the southeast corner of said quarter section. The property dimensions were 198' x 165'. The Mt. Monroe Cemetery was relocated east of the Craig Cemetery, which had recently been relocated to Michigan Road, in Madison Township. This researcher has not located any records concerning who coordinated the re-interment of the Mt. Monroe graves.
