Olive Branch Cemetery

Section 7, Township 4N, Range 11E.
Madison Township, Jefferson County, Indiana.

History and survey by Robert W. Scott.
Copyright July, 2001.

The Olive Branch Cemetery may have grown from a family cemetery. There is a transcription for Susan Hamilton, wife of Jas. Hamilton, d. Oct.17, 1820, age 26 yrs. This burial occurred before the founding of the Olive Branch Methodist Church. However, it is the only stone transcribed by the John Paul DAR with a death date that precedes the founding of the church. The church formed by April 4, 1835 when Richard and Martha Hall deeded a half acre in the SW 1/4 Section 7 Twp. 4N Range 11E to the trustees. The church disbanded in 1938. The church building was used as a private residence for many years, last by the Denning family, until it burned in 1987. This is an active cemetery. It is located on U.S. 62 in Madison Township just west of China.

This represents a complete resurvey by Robert W. Scott. (July 3, 2001) Information added from other sources is given in brackets. [ ] Inscriptions that are on stones are listed in quotation marks, “ ”. with the exception that ages and information indicating that a person is a son, daughter, or wife of another person are copied from the stones without adding punctuation.

Two or more names inscribed on the same stone are indicated by having the names follow a single surname. Question marks are given after a number whose reading is uncertain. Rain that began during my work made some of my notes hard to read, some rechecking is necessary. I welcome all corrections.
