Prior to October 1907, records of birth were filed only with the local health department in the county where the birth actually occurred.

Death Records

1882 - 1900   City and County Governments began death registration in the State of Indiana in 1882. These records were filed in the county where the death occurred. Duplicate records were not filed at the State Health Department.

After 1900 Death records may be found at both the County and State Health Departments. If a death record is not found at the State Department, than a search at the county department should be checked and vice versa. (For deaths occurring from 1900 to 1917, the city and/or county of death is required in order to locate the record).
