        • ERNST / EARNEST, from the Swiss village of Dattlikon in the Toss Valley at the foothills of the Alps. Hans ERNST m. Verena KREBSER on 6/21/1606. Son: Hans Jacob Ernst (b. 5/24/1609) m. Elsbeth STAMM. Son: Hans Heinrich Ernst (b. 2/06/1642) m. Barbara MEISTERHANS on 1/10/1669. Son: Ulrich Ernst (b. 5/01/1671) m. Judith FISCHER on 2/07/1699. Son: Felix Ernst (b. 1/25/1705) m. Elsbeth WEIDMANN on 3/02/1729. Felix went to America ca 1742. Felix and Elsbeth died during the voyage and were buried at sea. Their children, Heinrich (b. 6/08/1730-3/06/1809) and Anna (b. 1732), landed at Norfolk, VA, where they were bounded out. They never met again. Heinrich ERNST became Henry Earnest. Henry married ca 1760 to Mary STEPHENS (1742-8/16/1838), d/o Lawrence. Henry was a private in Co. M, under the command of Capt. Geo Mercer during the French and Indian War. Henry and Mary lived in Stephens City, VA. (then known as Newtown, VA). They then moved to Greene Co., TN, then a part of Washington Co., NC. He settled on the south bank of the Nollichuckey River from the mouth of Big Limestone Creek, abt a mile east of what is known as Earnests Bridge, to the mouth of Horsecreek, 2 miles southwest. This land, plus land in more remote areas given to the family for services rendered during the war, was divided into 5 plantations, one for each son. The original land grant from George III was last known to be in the possession of Charles E. Earnest, of Greenville.
          Brad Hoggatt is descended from Henry & Mary Earnest's son Felix Earnest (9/20/1762-7/16/1842) -or 7/18th and Felix's first wife, Sarah NORTH (m. 8/15/1786). She was the d/o John North. She was b. 2/18/1770, d. 8/01/1807. (Second wife was Sarah Oliphant, d/o John & Hannah (Amos) Oliphant, (b. 7/16/1784 - d. 2/10/1874), m. 5/14/1808). Felix was a Methodist preacher and a farmer. Son of Felix and Sarah was Henry F. Earnest, who was b. in Greene Co., TN on 2/17/1792, and d. in Sevier Co., TN on 10/17/1827. He first m. Rachel LOTSPEICH on 11/18/1811, d/o John Christopher and Rebecca Barbara HARTLEY Lotspeich. Rachel was born 11/17/1793 in Greene Co., TN and died there ca 1816. He m. his 2nd wife, Hannah BITNER, on 10/28/1816. She was b. 4/26/1797 in Greene Co., TN and d. 4/18/1877 in Rush Co., IN (Barrett Cemetery). Henry F. and Hannah Earnest's son was Isaac N. Earnest He was b. on 8/11/1819 in TN, and d. 1/10/1908 in Madison Co., IN. He is buried in Glencove Cemetery in Henry Co., IN. His wife's name was Susannah REDDICK. They were m. 12/26/1839 in Rush Co., IN. Susannah was b. ca 1824 in OH. They had moved near Summitville, Madison Co., IN. by 1850. Their son was John R. Earnest, b. 4/1844 in IN. He married Letia A. (surname unknown), b. ca 1844. Both d. sometime aft 1910. Their son was Isaac Newton Earnest, b. 11/1873 in IN. He married Nellie Blanche ADAMS ca 1900. She was b. in Kansas ca 1876, but raised in Indiana. Their daughter was Stella Mae Earnest, born 11/20/1901 in Madison Co., IN. She m. Floyd Ellis ODLE in 1925. Stella d. on 9/17/1947 and is bur. in Grant Memorial Cemetery, in Grant Co, IN. Their daughter was Ruth Elizabeth Odle, who was born 4/07/1929 and died 12/25/1977. She married Bennie Eugene HOGGATT.
